About the building

How we came to be building a permanent home on Almaden Expressway — and what will be inside it.

The fire

The Chabad House here got its start in 2020. In December 2021, a fire destroyed our center. What had been built over those first years was gone in a night.

The community's answer was to buy rather than rent. Together we purchased a permanent building at 5580 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, CA — ours, and not going anywhere.

What it will be

The building becomes a full-service center for Jewish life: the permanent home of Tamim Preschool and of Chabad of Almaden. A place for learning, prayer, celebration, and the ordinary weekday business of a community that has somewhere to be.

Rabbi Mendel and Mussi Weinfeld describe what they're after simply: a space where Jewish life thrives — a place where Jewish children walk out as proud Jews.

Where it stands

The building is bought and the work is underway, in phases. You can see what each phase covers on the building plans page, and the ways to be part of it on the giving page.
