Sponsor a Kiddush

Mark an occasion, or remember someone, by feeding the community on Shabbat morning.

What a Kiddush is

After Shabbat morning services the congregation doesn’t scatter. We make Kiddush over wine, and then everyone sits down together to eat — the Rabbi shares a short thought, people talk, and children run around. It is the part of the morning where a room of individuals becomes a congregation. You can see where it falls in the morning on our services schedule.

What sponsoring means

A sponsor covers the food for that week’s Kiddush. Before we eat, the reason is announced — in memory of someone, in honour of someone, or in gratitude for something — so the whole room knows whose day it is and why. Nothing about the morning changes except that it is dedicated to your occasion.

Two families sometimes sponsor the same week together, and more than one occasion can be announced. Tell us what you have in mind.

Occasions people sponsor for

A yahrzeit

The Hebrew-calendar anniversary of a parent, a spouse, a sibling or a child. The name is announced before the community eats, and a room full of people who never met them says amen.

A birthday

Yours, or a child’s, or a parent’s — marked with something more lasting than a cake.

The birth of a child

A first Shabbat as a family, shared with everybody who will be glad to hear the news.

An anniversary

A wedding anniversary, or the anniversary of an arrival — a move, a citizenship, a beginning.

Gratitude

A recovery, a new job, a safe return, or no particular reason at all. Thanking G-d in front of other people is an old and good habit.

If you are sponsoring for a yahrzeit and aren’t sure of the Hebrew date, our Kaddish and mourning page can work it out, and you can set a reminder so next year’s date doesn’t slip past you.

How to arrange one

Call the office and tell us the date you have in mind and the name you want announced. We’ll check the calendar with you and talk through what the Kiddush should be — it varies with the week and with what you’d like on the table.

We don’t list a sponsorship amount on this page. Call and we’ll discuss it honestly; nobody has ever been turned away over it.
